How-To: Make Crispy Croutons

A soup can be delicious on its own, but sometimes it's the croutons that make it great. You want it to be crisp and crunchy, so that it adds texture to a salad or soup. The perfect crouton doesn't get soggy or soft too fast, and it should add a nice flavour, complimenting your meal.

This crouton recipe always impresses. They are irresistible, and a pleasant thing to snack on while cooking.

Have some bread that's going stale? Making your own croutons is a great way to use up any less-than stellar bread.


Crispy Croutons

Yield: 2 cups Prep Time: 3 min Cook Time: 5-7 min Total Time: 10 min


4 slices of bread

2 Tbsp (30 mL) olive oil

1 tsp (4 g) each of: garlic powder, onion powder, Italian spice mix, and paprika powder


  1. Sliced the bread into 1 cm cubes.

  2. Pan-fried version: heat the oil in a large frying pan on high heat. Add the bread cubes and all the spices.

  3. Pan fry for 4-5 minutes, stirring often, until the croutons are golden and crispy.

  4. Oven-baked version: pre-heat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Toss the bread cubes, oil and spices together in bowl and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  5. Bake for 5-7 minutes, mixing once or twice during the baking time, until the croutons are golden.


  1. Storage: keep in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.

  2. Variations: use other spices like curry, cumin, and turmeric, or try with our Mexican or Ranch mix.
